On principle
A Texas megachurch has backed out of providing a service for a deceased Navy veteran 24 hours before it was to start because he was gay.
It’s okay though. Their justification for doing this has me convinced that it was the right thing to do.
We did decline to host the service — not based on hatred, not based on discrimination, but based on principle.
Right. Based on their principle of…hating and discriminating gays?
Most Christians like to believe their faith conveys the virtues of love and understanding more effectively than any other. What the church should have done was have the memorial service in spite of the man being gay, on principle. What a statement that would have made. Imagine if the pastor would have instead said this:
We are choosing to host the service — not based on tradition, not based on conventionality, but based on the Christian principle of “love thy neighbor”.
“It’s not that we didn’t love the family”, he continues. Tough love I guess. The man isn’t even alive to feel the hatred. His family, however, is. They have done nothing wrong. By mere accident of birth, they happen to belong to the same family as a gay man. They can feel the hatred after this church metaphorically kicked them in the balls.
I’m curious to know why the church thinks this is not discrimination.
Thanks to PZ for the link.
“Love thy neighbor” is totally open to interpretation with those folks. Their idiocy just slays me. Does this bozo pastor really think that no one in his rich white church is gay or lesbian? Well, they are, and you can bet they “get it on the side.” No pun intended. Those “born again” mega-churches need to be seen for what they are:Fundamentalist strongholds of some of the most wacked out philosophy known to man or woman. Their “love,” is a big fat bank account and a whole lot of rampant materialism, because “God” wants it that way. I feel very sorry for any gay, lesbian, or bisexual kid that has the misfortune of growing up in Nebraska, but I can’t even begin to imagine what it must be like to be a young person, knowing you are gay, let alone, having to hang around, this bunch of loony screwballs. And these sanctimonious buffoons wonder why the suicide rate is so high among gay and lesbian youth? What a damn example to set for all the world to see! Then, to really pour salt on the wounds of the family of the deceased, the fucking congregation cheers when the pastor explained, rather, rationalized, why their church engaged in the hateful behavior that it did. What a bunch of first class pigs! What a bunch of self-serving temple dwellers! Jesus this…Jesus that…you people are the scum of the earth, and you disgust me along with many other millions who see you for the great swindlers that you are. To the gallows…all of you!
Doesn’t really have to do with religion. But being gay.
I was talking the other day to someone I work with in the military. He was telling me about how if you are found out to be gay in the military you get “Dishonourable Discharge.” I thought that was a little harsh for just being gay. For those that don’t know what that means, they can’t vote, ever buy guns, and anything else the Gov’t Can do to make your life suck. For just being gay.
